Family Vacations - Disney or Bust!!!
I
couldn’t help but notice that many of my Facebook friends recently
headed to Disney for the February break from school. Seems like each
time I logged in, I saw another family picture with happy faces at the
airport waiting for their flight, standing in line waiting to get on a
ride, or a family picture where they are all wearing Goofy hats, or
Mickey ears…
I have to admit it was really nice to find out that my husband (at the time, boyfriend) loved rollercoasters as much as I did. Our Honeymoon destination was Disney. My fair Irish skin combined with my husband being so antsy made it really easy for us to rule out a tropical beach Honeymoon where we sit and do nothing for a week. Instead, we opted for the crazy schedule of a Disney vacation where we take advantage of every waking minute of every day at one of the Theme Parks.
Two decades later, our family still loves to go to Disney. I’ll never forget my son’s 1st trip to Disney at 5 years old. His first Disney ride was quite an experience….
We were so excited to show him the ‘magic’ of Disney, we sort of forgot to give him the scoop on how ‘over the top’ Disney can be with their rides. He was used to roller coasters found at local theme parks in our area and loved them – and was luckily tall enough for most of them. Following what we had always done in Disney, we had a full agenda planned for Day 1 – Animal Kingdom. To be sure we could get through the agenda, we had planned to do the ‘Dinosaur’ ride first.
It’s not until the ride got moving that I realized our big mistake – our poor son had no idea what was about to hit him – and the ride was already underway… I felt like a horrible mother!!! At the end of the ride, we looked over at him – he was between us in the car – and he was an odd combination of green and ghostly pale at the same time. His eyes were as wide as saucers and he had a death grip on the handrail. As we pried his little fingers off the bar and led him to the safety of the outside, we tried to reassure him that he had fun and ‘Oh my, doesn’t Disney have great rides?’ Everything is totally fake but by shaking the car a lot and making the noises crazy loud, they can really make you feel like this totally fake ride is real. Right?’ Trying to convince ourselves as much as him that everything was going to be ok.
Well, he really proved to be the offspring of roller coaster lovers because we gave him a play by play of what was going to happen on the next ride and when it happened as we said, he was hooked! We had the best week ever as we got to see his love for Disney grow as each day went by.
What is your family’s favorite family vacation destination? Tell us by making a comment below – we’d love to hear from you!
